Dr Stuart Flanagan
Dr Stuart Flanagan is the resident Doctor on BBC Radio 1’s Surgery and part of the health team on Shelagh Fogarty’s show on BBC Radio Five Live. He is also a regular contributor to various TV and radio shows including BBC Breakfast, CBBC’s Newsround, Channel 4’s Sex Education Show and programmes right across the World Service.
Away from the media, he is an NHS Specialty Doctor in General Medicine and Sexual Health, working in one of London's busiest Clinics. He also leads the Young People's Services at the centre.
Since qualifying from Queen's University, Belfast (with a 1st Class BSc Honours in Anatomy in addition to his medical degree), he has worked in a wide range of medical specialties, including Cardiology, Respiratory Medicine, Intensive Care, Gastroenterology, Rheumatology, Endocrinology, Infectious Diseases and Sexual Health, with experience in Emergency Medicine and Surgery. He has special interests in Sexual and Reproductive Health (including HIV/Contraception), Men’s Health and Health Promotion.
Dr Stuart is a lecturer and tutor in Communicable Diseases at UCL Medical School with a passion for imparting medical knowledge, and he enjoys teaching medical students in clinical examination and communication skills.
Stuart is a confident public speaker and in October 2010 he hosted the Royal College Of Psychiatrists’ annual World Mental Health Day event in Belfast.
He is a natural communicator with a strong passion for health promotion, and his wide-ranging expertise and natural ease in communicating complex medical concepts allow him to offer authoritative and engaging health advice and support.
