Simon Hughes

When it comes to knowing just what goes on behind the scenes in Whitehall, Simon Hughes is your man.
For over 10 years Simon was involved in media and event production for the British government, putting him in a unique position to observe politicians and their various and conflicting egos at work.
As Director of Live Events he was in the firing line if events and presentations didn’t satisfy the exacting demands of three very different Prime Ministers - Blair, Brown and Cameron.
Simon has seen just what goes on at the very heart of power and his first hand knowledge provides a fascinating insight into a world very few people get to see, let alone understand.
He talks about the challenges and realities that governments of the day have to face, and how these have to be factored into communications, be they campaigns or events. He can talk authoritatively on the business of government, and indeed doing business with government whilst knowing at first hand the importance of good communication.
He knows from experience that not every politician is a born communicator, and sometimes they need more than a little help with their presentation skills, the very same challenges that face organisations both in the public and private sector. He also understands why leaders constantly need to innovate, motivate and inspire.
Because of this, he has a reputation as an engaging keynote speaker, having addressed audiences both in the UK and internationally. Topics range from government communications to influencing behaviour change, public engagement and how to achieve the best return on investment in communications.
On a lighter note, away from keynotes, his wealth of anecdotes makes Simon a highly entertaining speaker, ideal for after dinner or lighter conference slots.
Prior to working in government circles Simon’s career focused on TV and radio production - writing, casting and voicing adverts for Capital Radio before moving into commercial TV and radio. It was this rich mix of media experience that helped him land his unique role in the world of government communications and politics.
Simon has the ability to hold an audience and establish an instant rapport with his quick witted humour. This makes him a skilled event moderator, facilitator and chair, and he is very comfortable incorporating social media (Twitter and the like) into presentations. At the most recent Summer Eventia he chaired, over 29,000 tweets were received and Simon seamlessly incorporated many of the comments and questions into the various plenaries and discussions.
A man for all seasons, it’s safe to say Simon Hughes really does know how to keep calm and carry on!
