Robbie was reared in Lanarkshire and educated at Hamilton Academy and Strathclyde University. He taught for one year in Blantyre before joining the Prison Service as an Assistant Governor in 1969.Polmont Young Offenders, Longriggend Remand Institution and Edinburgh Prison

Robbie retired from the prison service in September 1996, and is now a full time after dinner speaker, delighting audiences across the country, and a popular choice for Burns Nights.
Claim to Fame
William McIlvaney based his story "The Prisoner" in his book of short stories, "The Walking Wounded" on Robbie after he visited Dungavel.
Sporting Career
In his youth, played junior professional football but his career was cut short at a tragically early age due to a complete lack of ability.
Pastimes
Member of Lamlash and Hamilton Golf Clubs, Variety Club of Great Britain and Hamilton and Lochaber Burns Clubs.
