Sir Peter O`Sullevan

Sir Peter O`Sullevan

Peter O’Sullevan’s career started with a lucky break in 1944, after responding to an advert in Sporting Life. He had to write 400 words on the weekend’s racing at Ascot, and used some tips from a few friends of his – 3 of the 4 tips came in, and one at 20-1. After that he was offered a full time job.

He went on to write a highly successful column for the Express (in those days a good tipster could do wonders to a paper’s circulation) and of course became synonymous as the BBC’s Voice of Racing, commentating on all of the major races until his retirement in 1997 the same year he was knighted.

He has also been a successful racehorse owner, and among his winners was Be Friendly, a statue of which is at Haydock in tribute to Sir Peter and the horse’s win in the Vernon's Sprint Cup in 1966.

Since retirement he has focussed on his “Voice of Racing” charity, which raises money to support, retired, injured and neglected horses.
