Bob 'the Cat' Bevan MBE
Bob, referred to in The Stage as “Britain’s leading after-dinner speaker,” is probably the first person to be honoured by HM the Queen for after-dinner speaking.
He is now in demand all over the world. He has twice toured Australia and is due back again for the 2010 Ashes Tour. In the past 12 months he has appeared in Bahrain, Singapore, Thailand and the West Indies.
Starting as a sporting speaker, he has spoken at 77 of the 92 Premier and Football League clubs, as well as countless, cricket, rugby, golf and other sports functions.
He is a regular on Channel 4’s “Countdown”, followed Danny Baker as host of BBC Radio 5’s “Six O Six” and became a fixture with Sir Terry Wogan on “Auntie’s Bloomers”.
Today he is also regarded as a fine corporate comedian, presenter and awards host. Unlike his goalkeeping he is a “safe pair of hands” with clean material.
His business background – he was PR Director for a major PLC for 14 years and is still a Member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations and the National Union of Journalists – makes him an ideal choice for the corporate market.
He is a Member of the Board of Trustees of the Lord’s Taverners, an Honorary Barker of the Variety Club and a member of the Grand Order of Water Rats.
He has appeared with most of the top stars of show business and sport. Rod Stewart even booked him for his father’s birthday party.
Another fan is the Duke of Edinburgh who told a member of the audience “I like that chap’s voice.” Bob had just delivered a poem teasing the Duke for never recognising him.
Poem-, parody- and script-writing is another of Bob’s fortes. He has written for Lord Coe, Sir David Frost and William Hague among others. He also wrote for the late Lord Runcie, Archbishop of Canterbury. When he died Lady Runcie wrote “you are a legend in our house with “The Johnson Brothers” and “Lenin in Poland” jokes.
Even Piers Morgan referred to Bob as “legendary” in his latest book and the Sunday Times, which published one of his poems, said
“Bevan is such an accomplished joke writer and orator.”
His best-selling book Nearly Famous, published by Virgin, needed two reprints in hardback and is still available in paperback.
