We would sum up a good conference facilitation as thus: “Done well, you don’t realise how hard it is, but it’s so easy to see it done badly”.The chair needs to be the focal point of the day, directing proceedings and driving the pace, yet not distracting from the messages of the day. He or she needs to have a good overview of the subject and background to the event in order to ask the probing questions, yet needs to be able to stand back with dispassion to give the contributor a reasoned hearing. Most importantly, the chair is working on behalf of the audience, probing, holding to account and ultimately ensuring their delivery of the key messages.
